This 12" wide gourd is an original design by Shirley Lehner Rhoades, created
using pyrography techniques to outline the figure and delineate the colors and
shapes. It is painted with leather dyes and acrylics, in rust, black, white,
copper and russett. Copper leaf was used to highlight some areas. the figure
wraps around the front half of the gourd. The opening is cut in a freeform
design around the figure. The hair on the Sheherazade is carved out of the shell
of the gourd, in a wavy pattern, showing the natural tan coloring of the gourd.
Sheherazade is the fabeled Arabic heroine of “The Thousand and One Nights” tale.
The exterior of the gourd has been sealed with a protective polyeurothane
varnish, and the interior of the gourd has been painted with black acrylic.
