This 17” tall mask by Shirley Lehner Rhoades intricately woodburned and painted
with leather dyes and acrylics in shades of green and gold. A beautiful
variegated gold leaf has been applied to the face and neck. The eyes and mouth
are cut out. The deep green zigzag pattern down the long neck reflects the
patterns around the eyes. Texture created with jade green sand paint is a soft
touch to offset the strong geometric patterns. The hair is securely sewn to the
top of the head and is made from 100% rayon chenille and wool fiber for texture.
A small round woodburned gourd piece has been added to create the mouth. The
gourd has been protectively sealed with a semi-gloss wood varnish. A cord of
waxed linen is on the back of the gourd for hanging.
